Grey box. How can a tester read the code base and why?

The "software tester" profession is growing, the requirements are increasing not only for beginners but also for middle-level professionals, and one of the ways to develop a tester is to become familiar with the code base and project architecture to start applying grey box testing more widely. 
Many mistakenly assume that grey box testing is accessibility, DB, and log reading. But these are all tools, and I'll tell you why. 
One approach to sorting out the grey box is the c4 model.
